Finding a print company local to you isn’t hard, unless you really live in the middle of nowhere, finding the right one is tough though.
Price of course is a consideration and many market themselves on price: many people buying print services don’t have the knowledge they need to determine who is really offering the best value though. Knowing about GSM and digital or litho printing is important to make sure that you get a good deal. A low price may mean cheap materials and you may be better off with a company who market themselves for the level of service. Of course if you want stuff printed as cheaply as possible where quality isn’t important then look out for offers and simply get a few quotes.
GSM is one important thing to consider if you want a quality finish to your printing, GSM is grams per square meter and is the weight and therefore thickness of the paper. If you’re not sure what you are getting ask to see a sample of what the printers will print on to and compare a few options; you may also want to choose between gloss or matt finishes; for items such as headed paper you may want to use expensive paper or even have watermarks done.
Compliment slips and headed paper’s quality is more important than you might realize, remember often you will send out invoices and letters to people who have never met you and never seen your offices: good quality headed paper shows you as a professional business.
Business cards are also important to make a good impression, often you will meet people for the first time at events and networking away from your offices. The business card may be the main cue they have to determine how professional and successful you are: and if weeks or months later they are looking for a supplier in their rolodex then a good quality business card will stick out; design, quality of the card and also printing quality are important.
You may want to go to a printer who can offer digital or litho, some offer both. With digital printing though it can be reasonable quality it varies depending on the printers ( the machines) actually used and their quality and age; development of digital printing moves fast so somewhere with the latest high end printers may be able to almost match lithographic quality.
Lithogrpahic print quality still remains the best though and may make financial sense anyway if you are printing more than 500 of one item. Beyond 500 the cost per unit for lithographic comes down dramatically; what you will want to avoid though is getting more than you need. It may seem to make sense to get more, especially if you really can’t make do with digital but you could waste a lot if you don’t use items up. Many businesses get very long runs done of things like packaging, business cards or flyers only to find out that they change a phone number, special offer or other detail soon after: meaning that there is a huge amount of waste. Also consider that with digital there is no extra cost in getting various copies of promotional literature done which could each be aimed at a different type of customer.
